MEET YOUR THERAPIST

A little about me…

Hi! I’m Rachael—originally from Cork, Ireland, but for the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to call the stunning Valle de Lecrín in Granada, Spain, my home. Fittingly, Valle de Lecrín translates to ‘Valley of Happiness’ in Arabic, a name given by the Moors in the 7th century when they fell in love with its beauty and charm. My private practice name and logo is a little nod to this very special place— I hope the lemon paraphernalia makes a little more sense now!

As an integrative psychotherapist, I believe that no single approach works for everyone. Each person’s experience is unique, even when facing some of life’s most common challenges. That’s why I see therapy as a collaborative journey built on trust and safety facilitated in a space where you feel seen, heard and unconditionally supported.

Therapists are often known as ‘wounded healers’ because many are drawn to the profession through the path of their own healing journeys. Carl Jung suggested that those who have worked through their own struggles can offer the most profound level of empathy and insight to others.

As a self proclaimed wounded healer, I understand how trauma shapes our lives—and how vital the right support is. That’s why I’ve completed specialist trauma training with The Trauma Research Foundation, ensuring I offer the most up-to-date, evidence-based approaches. With both professional expertise and personal experience, I create a safe, compassionate space for healing and growth.

If you’re feeling a little off, struggling to quiet your thoughts, or just not sure what’s going on —that’s completely okay. You don’t have to have all the answers. I’m here to help shine a light and help you find a way back home to yourself..

Supporting you in these key areas

  • Depression is a complex mental health condition affecting millions worldwide . It involves persistent sadness, loss of interest, changes in appetite or sleep, and hopelessness. Unlike temporary sadness, it often requires professional help. Addressing depression is vital, as it impacts daily functioning and quality of life. With proper treatment, including therapy, recovery is possible, allowing individuals to rebuild their lives and rediscover joy.

  • Anxiety is a complex emotional response impacting both mind and body, activating the sympathetic nervous system for "fight or flight" reactions. The amygdala prompts the hypothalamus to release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle readiness. While useful in real threats, chronic anxiety can cause daily distress, leading to physical issues like tension headaches and gastrointestinal problems, as well as mental challenges such as persistent worry and difficulty concentrating. Recognizing anxiety's effects is crucial for management; therapeutic methods like cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness can help mitigate these impacts and improve stress responses.

  • Trauma impacts emotional and mental well-being, arising from accidents, disasters, abuse, neglect, or loss. It can be acute (single event), chronic (repeated exposure), or complex (prolonged incidents, often in childhood). These lead to mental health issues like PTSD (flashbacks and anxiety) and C-PTSD (prolonged trauma affecting relationships and self-image). Understanding trauma types and seeking therapy are essential for healing.

  • Dysfunctional family systems can significantly impact an individual's emotional well-being and personal development. In such environments, roles within the family often become blurred, leading to unhealthy dynamics. For example, parentification occurs when a child is forced to take on adult responsibilities, which can hinder their ability to form a healthy sense of self. Enmeshment, where boundaries between family members become muddied, can lead individuals to struggle with autonomy and independence. Each family member may adopt specific roles—such as the caretaker, the scapegoat, or the golden child—further complicating their ability to express their true feelings and needs. Understanding these dynamics is essential for healing and breaking free from the patterns that can carry into adulthood, impacting relationships and self-esteem. Through psychotherapy, individuals can learn to navigate these challenges and reclaim their identity.

  • Grief and loss extend far beyond the experience of death; they permeate various aspects of our lives, influencing our mental health in profound ways. The sorrow we feel for a loved one who has passed is a familiar type of grief, but we also encounter living losses—relationships that remain unfulfilled due to estrangement, the heartache of unreciprocated love, or the erosion of connections once thought unbreakable. These forms of grief can leave us feeling isolated and adrift. Additionally, the loss of identity or the future we once envisioned can create an emotional landscape fraught with confusion and sadness. The impact of these losses is often underestimated yet can lead to anxiety, depression, and a struggle to find meaning. I recognize that navigating through such grief is crucial for healing and reclaiming mental well-being. Embracing these feelings and understanding their significance is the first step toward rebuilding hope and fostering resilience.

  • Therapy can play a key role in helping adults manage ADHD symptoms by offering tailored support that goes beyond medication. Through therapy, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of how ADHD affects their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I have experience in helping clients develop practical strategies for improving focus, organization, time management, and emotional regulation. Therapy can also address the emotional impact of living with ADHD, such as low self-esteem, anxiety, or shame, fostering greater self-compassion and resilience. With a collaborative and compassionate approach, I can empower adults with ADHD to navigate challenges and build on their strengths.
